The Kelpies and Helix Park

We were excited to visit the Kelpies and Helix Park in Falkirk.  There was a large car park and only a short 5 minute walk alongside the canal path of the Forth and Clyde canal and we could see the two amazing and gigantic horse sculptures.

As you walk closer to the Kelpies it takes your breath away at just how big and beautiful these works of art are.  They are the biggest pieces of art in Scotland at 30 metres high.

You can take a guided tour of the Kelpies which takes you inside the sculptures but we just decided to walk around and it was really great to see these up close.  At night they illuminate the Kelpies which I bet is an amazing sight.

kp6There is also a visitor centre and café here which we didn’t use but looked clean and modern.

We only spent about 20 minutes here but the girls had lots of fun running around the Kelpies but it’s a visit that you could extend by using the helix park but unfortunately it was cold, windy and wet during our visit so we couldn’t use it. This was a shame as it looked brilliant with lots of children’s climbing frames and a playpark for all ages.

There are also some fantastic cycle routes in this area which we would look at doing again with the children.

If you are up visiting Edinburgh or Glasgow then it’s worth making  a detour to visit the Kelpies and adding it to your Scotland bucket list.  It’s it’s only a few minutes drive from The Falkirk Wheel and it would be easy to do both attractions on the one day.

We definitely recommend a visit especially during the summer months  so you can enjoy all of the attractions on offer.
